Challenge Quilts
Each year, the Guild offers a challenge whereby
Guild-Members can "strut their stuff", showing off
creativity, technical accuracy, and ability to get across the
message of the theme in accordance with certain rules. The Guild then votes upon the
quilts. This year's entries were revealed and voted
on at the August 2009 meeting. There were 18 entries this year.
(Photos displayed below.)
2009 RULES
- Theme – From Canvas to Quilt
Imagine that a well-known artist (i.e. Rembrandt, Monet, Pollack,
Picasso…..)
was given access to all of the materials in your quilting room in order to create a masterpiece.
Your challenge is to create the “painting” that you imagine this artist would
create using your palate of fabrics, threads, and other materials. It may be one of their
famous pieces or something else that the artist would have created in their style. The challenge
is to demonstrate the artist’s style through use of fabric, color, quilting techniques,
textures, value, and other elements of design.
- Size - No smaller than 80” around; no larger than 160” around.
- Border - The quilt must have a border that represents a frame, as you would have on a piece of
art. The border must have mitered corners.
- Signature - “Sign” the “painting” with the
artist's name in the lower right hand corner.
BASIS FOR VOTING
Best of Show vote should go to the quilt that best exhibits all of the elements below.
- Theme vote should go to the quilt that best carries out the theme “From Canvas to Quilt”. i.e. how
well the quilter demonstrated the artist’s style through the use of fabric, color, quilting techniques,
textures, value, and other elements of design, and best carries out the rules of the challenge.
- Creativity vote should go to the quilt that uses the most unusual and/or original techniques, design,
style, detail, etc.
- Workmanship vote should go to the quilt that has the best quality of workmanship – stitch quality,
finished look, detail, etc.

Notes
from Karen, the photographer: These are
thumbnail views - click on for full-size view. To save an image for your
computer, right-click on the full-size view and use the "save picture
as" function (make sure you have a folder set up to save them to). Note that the "full-size" images I took
originally have been
resized to make them smaller files to speed downloads and save server space;
this affects color and precision.
Some of the
photos turned out quite poorly, and I have plans to re-shoot them.
