Guild-sponsored Shop Hops

Planning for these events has had to be put on hold.  Our finest-kind Travel Chairman Marilyn will be having surgery soon.  However, the plans for the annual trip to the Jacksonville Quiltfest are still "on", and Marilyn plans to be at the May Meeting to start taking reservations and collecting reservation fees.

UPDATE to 2010 City Hall Show Information

The Show will run from July 14th through September 1st, 2010.  Click here for the link to the updated Guidelines, and here for the link to the Entry form.  Both are in PDF format.

Workshop on March 13th, 2010

"Make Your Mark"

Contemporary quilt artist Jennie Zipperer will teach us different surface design techniques. We will learn to use shiva sticks, make our own rubbing plate, do foiling, and, time permitting, explore other materials and techniques with this knowledgeable and creative teacher. Participants will leave with a reference guide combining handouts and samples created in class. The workshop will be held Saturday, March 13 from 9:00 until 3:00 with a break for lunch. Class limit: 20 people. Fee is $35, which includes most materials. Supply list will be provided when you register. Contact Maureen O'Doogan to register and mail your fee to her.

Show and Tell

For our monthly meeting pictures, to help identify who showed what items during our beloved Show-and-Tell sequence, we plan to start a new practice and see how well it works. The plan is, before the meeting starts, for "Show-ers" to write down on 3" x 5" cards their name and the name of their quilt(s).  The sign-up location is at the Block of the Month table .  Then, at the start of the meeting, the cards will be given to the webmaster or whoever is taking the pictures, so she/her can alphabetize them to more easily match up who was where in line to the pictures taken.

Quilters Unlimited 2009 Challenge Quilts on Display

Arrangements are in the works for many of these quilts to be displayed at the Suwannee Valley Quilt and Old Time Craft Festival in Trenton, Florida in March.  While this one-day show is predominantly held outdoors, the plan is for the "From Canvas to Quilt" challenge quilts on display inside the train depot for at least one week before the the day of the show as well as during the show.  See the Show List for details about the event.

Challenge Quilt

The 2010 Challenge Rules are now available and can be purchased for $5  from Wendy Stone. The show theme this year is “Garden Party.” Your finished challenge quilt will be due at the September 2010 guild meeting.

2010 Blocks of the Month

This year's Project Quilt is entitled "Saturday In The Garden".

Instead of posting one block per month, this year, we have all the instructions in one pdf file that can be saved to your own computer and/or printed.  The file is in black and white -- there are no set colors to be used, although the picture of the pieced top (at right) may provide some guidance.

Where to get supplies, long-arm quilting, and sewing machine repair to support our quilting

People (new quilters, in particular) frequently ask where to go to get their quilting fabrics, threads, rulers, etc.  The Guild's newsletter and website do not provide such information, because it could compromise our non-profit status by being construed as supporting certain "for-profit" entities.  However, there is a companion website that is independently run that attempts to provide this information as a service to the quilters in the Tallahassee region.  Please refer to www.tallyquiltingresources.com

Busy Hands

The Sit'n'Stitch group Frayed Edges has volunteered to take on a Guild project, that of making the "Domestic Violence Awareness Quilt" for the Department of Corrections.
This will be a queen size wall-display type quilt featuring a large tree with flowing bare branches. The quilt top will then travel throughout the state of Florida to different counties for Department of Corrections personnel to add a leaf representing a victim of domestic violence. This travel and leaf pinning adventure will take approximately six months.
When the quilt top returns to Tallahassee, the leaves will be permanently attached to the quilt top. The quilt top will then be basted and quilted. Once completed, the quilt will hang in the lobby of the Department of Corrections.
