This year for the Block Raffle we have easy blocks, intermediate blocks, and something a little different. To encourage quilters to expand their skills, four of the blocks have been labeled "Skill-Builders." The skill-builder blocks utilize some more advanced quilting techniques, such as applique', curve seams, paper-piecing, and set-in corners. This is a good opportunity to get your feet wet and try something a little bit outside of your comfort zone by making one or two blocks for a raffle without having to commit a lot of time and fabric to a big project. To encourage you to try out some of the skill-builder blocks, quilters who complete one will put their name on a list and at the end of the year, names will be drawn to win prizes. Each time a quilter completes a skill-builder block, her name will go into the hat for the drawing; if you complete all four skill-builder blocks, you name will go in 4 times.
Another new experiment we are trying for the coming year's Block Raffle is designing some suggested block settings using EQ6. Many times it is difficult to visualize what an entire quilt may look like by just looking at one block. More than once I have regretted not making the block because I didn't realize how beautiful it would look in a quilt. This year we have worked up several possible quilt layouts and settings for the blocks using the suggested color schemes. These virtual quilts will be posted on the QU Website.
We hope you all will try many of the raffle blocks this year. Happy sewing!!!
