Ohio Stars in a Trellis
Final size before borders: 48″ x 60″
Fabric needed:
| Dark for star points (20 stars) | 40 | 5½-inch squares | 1 yard |
| Dark for centers (Can be same as above) | 20 | 4½-inch squares | ½ yard |
| Medium Light for triangles inside star | 20 | 5½-inch squares | ½ yard |
| Light for outside triangle of hourglass blocks | 20 | 5½-inch squares | ½ yard |
| Same light fabric for 1/2 of half-square triangles | 40 | 5-inch blocks | 1 yard |
| Medium fabric or fabrics for 1/2 of half-square triangles | 40 | 5-inch blocks | 1 yard |
Instructions
- Place the 5-inch blocks, right sides together, with the light on the top. Draw a diagonal line from upper left corner to lower right corner. Sew a scant ¼ inch on each side of the line by chain piecing. Cut on the line. Press toward the dark fabric. Trim each resulting half-square triangle to exactly 4½ inches square, with the diagonal in two corners.
- Place 20 of the Dark 5½-inch squares right side up, and place the 20 Medium Light 5½-inch squares right side down on them. Draw a diagonal line from upper left corner to lower right corner. Sew a scant ¼ inch on each side of the line by chain piecing. Cut on the line. Press toward the dark fabric.
- Place 20 of the Dark 5½-inch squares right side up, and place the 20 Light 5½-inch squares right side down on them. Draw a diagonal line from upper left corner to lower right corner. Sew a scant ¼ inch on each side of the line by chain piecing. Cut on the line. Press toward the dark fabric.
- Place 1 each of 2. & 3. above, right sides together, Dark against Light and Medium, butting the seams together, and draw a line from the corners not in the seam. Pin at the seam and end of the line. Chain piece, ¼ inch from the line on both sides of the line. Cut on the line. Press open. Trim each resulting hourglass block (quarter-square triangle) to exactly 4½ inches square with the seams at the corners. (Look twice through the 6″ square, clear acrylic ruler.)
- Lay out on a design wall or bed. Assemble the blocks in rows, then sew together. Press first row to left, next to right, down the rows. Sew rows together, and press up or down.
- Add borders to desired size, if you wish. Can be quilted in the ditch in 4 directions, from the center out, horizontally and vertically, and in 4 directions, from the center out to each corner diagonally, with one thread color, the same as the “trellis” (light background).

NOTES
Trim half-square triangle squares and quarter-square triangle squares (hourglass) to final size
Can use 80 for Quilt A, or 120 for B or C, plain 5½ X 5½ inch blocks in place of half-square triangles
